Far Niente

The Far Niente winery, originally founded in 1885, was purchased in 1979 by Beth and Gil Nickel and restored to its original splendor. During the three-year restoration, the original name, Far Niente, from an Italian phrase that romantically translated means “without a care,” was found carved in stone on the front of the building where it remains to this day. Surrounded by 13 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, Far Niente is thought by many to be among the most stunning in the Napa Valley and is on the National Register of Historical Places.

In 2016 Grgich Hills Estate is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the historic Judgment of Paris tasting.  Miljenko “Mike” Grgich first earned worldwide recognition at this blind tasting in 1976 when the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that he crafted beat the best of France and revolutionized the wine world. Mike then partnered with Austin Hills to open their family owned and operated winery in 1977. The love of farming and a passion for wine brought Tony Peju to the Napa Valley. A series of ideas – starting in his birthplace on the Caspian Sea, then France, England and eventually, Los Angeles – created the Peju's Napa Valley winery. There are now two generations of the Peju family working in the winery. In September, 2007, Peju earned Organic Certification for its Rutherford Estate Vineyard from the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Peju has been moving towards organic farming practices in all three of its Napa Valley vineyards.
