What becomes a Legend most? When it comes to the career of Academy Award-winning screen goddess Sophia Loren, many things come to mind. But it’s hard to resist her zest for living and pursuit of creativity, beauty and love.

In many ways, these are also philosophies that Festival del Sole shares. Which is just one reason we are so proud to present this truly special celebration honoring Ms. Loren, and introducing the LA Virtuosi chamber orchestra, founded and conducted by her son Carlo Ponti.

“Dolce far niente.”
“What does that mean?”
“Oh, it’s a saying we have in Italy: How sweet to do nothing.”
“Well, you’re in America now and they can pull you in for that.”
“Oh, poor Americans.”

The occasion takes place at Far Niente, one of Napa’s most storied and luxurious vineyards. Dinner will be orchestrated by Piero Selvaggio and Michael Chiarello to reflect the Ponti family’s Italian roots and passion for food, and will feature superb vintages from Far Niente, which, like La Bella Sophia, are known the world over.

Academy Award winner Whoopi Goldberg emcees an homage to Ms. Loren and her life’s work. The evening’s pièce de résistance will be the debut of the LA Virtuosi, an ensemble devoted to the advocacy and support of music education. The musicians will perform selections chosen just for the occasion, including the theme from Two Women, for which Sophia Loren won her Oscar for Best Actress, and the world premiere of Sinfonietta per Sofia, by renowned contemporary composer Daniel Brewbaker.

“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”

– Sophia Loren
