What to Expect Day 7

The Philadelphia Inquirer calls him "a poet," a pianist with "an expressive edge to his playing that charms, questions and coaxes." That's high praise for an 18-year-old musician. The Bay Area native is the Richard A. Doran Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he was accepted at the age of ten. Daniel Hsu is one of two winners of this year's prestigious Gilmore Young Artist Award, given every other year to the most promising American pianists under the age of 23. Among other ensembles, Hsu has played with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Golden Gate Philharmonic, and has upcoming concerts at the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival at Carnegie Hall, and with the New Haven Symphony at Yale's Woolsey Hall.

The Peju family welcomes guests to PEJU Province Winery and Vineyards for a luncheon exploring the artistry of food and wine. The afternoon begins with a tour of the winery’s idyllic grounds and gardens, which boasts impeccable lawns, a plethora of flowers planted by Herta Peju and organic vegetable gardens. Following the tour, guests are invited to sit amongst the vines and enjoy a farm-to-table meal prepared by Chef Alex Espinoza. Using organic ingredients, many from the estate’s abundant gardens, today’s lunch is designed to perfectly complement Peju’s beautifully memorable wines, made from grapes grown, in their words, by “harvesting the sun.”

The soaring voices of the Young People's Chorus of New York City and the acclaimed operatic baritone Lester Lynch will fill the beautiful Mission-style chapel of the Christian Brothers' historic Mont La Salle, a serene space with superb acoustics.

The concert opens with the award-winning youth chorus, whose far-ranging repertoire encompasses Renaissance and classical works, folk, gospel, contemporary and world music. Then comes the celebrated Lester Lynch. Recognized for his charismatic portrayals and commanding voice, Lynch will sing music from his forthcoming Pentatone recording of American Spirituals, joined by pianist Brian Farrell and violinist Igor Pikayzen. Lynch and the Young People's Chorus will then join forces and perform together, closing out an evening of sublime music at Mont La Salle.

Music, food, wine and the unmatched contemporary art at the heart of The Hess Collection make tonight's dinner a most memorable affair. After the evening concert at Mont La Salle, guests will stroll along a tree-lined path to the historic 1903 stone winery, welcomed by hosts Timothy and Sabrina Persson.

Patrons will dine alfresco on an exquisite meal by Executive Chef Chad Hendrickson, prepared with the freshest ingredients available, many from the property's abundant culinary gardens. Dinner will be paired with Hess' flagship Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines.

Capping off the evening is a surprise musical performance. Patrons are also invited to view the winery's extensive art collection, which includes works by such notable artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Goldsworthy, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Frank Stella, Francis Bacon, and Franz Gertsch.
