Daily Wrap Up, Wednesday July 16

Wednesday marked the official halfway point of Festival del Sole's ninth season. The day started off with a tear-inducing performance by soprano-super-star-in-the-making Julia Bullock at Napa'Jarvis Conservatory. The concert was part of the Bouchaine Young Artist Series, a free and lively concert series featuring performances by the next generation of great musicians and sponsored by Bouchaine Vineyards

Half a valley away, a small group of guests were greeted with a glass of HALL Sauvignon Blanc for an intimate family-style lunch at the home of Gary and Pam Jaffe of Jaffe Estate. The fabulous alfresco lunch featured a menu of: Figs and Red Onion Galette, Mushroom and Brie Toast, Salmon Cobb Salad, Summer Peach and Prosciutto Caprese Salad, Five Dot Flat Iron Steak over Arugula, and Mediterranean Panzanella, all paired with Jaffe Transformation, a 55/45 Cabernet/Merlot blend. For dessert, an incredible Strawberry Shortcake was served with Creme Fraiche and a Pinot Noir Reduction.

Later in the evening, guests filled Castello di Amorosa for a sold out concert of the Zukerman ChamberPlayers (Pinchas Zukerman on violin, Amanda Forsyth on cello and Angela Cheng on piano). The program included Beethoven's Piano Trio in B-flat Major, De Falla's Suite Populaire Espagnole for Cello and Piano; Franck's Sonata for Violin and Piano, and Mendelssohn's Piano Trio in D minor.

After the concert, VIP Pass holders reconvened at the Patron Dinner at Robert Mondavi Winery. After a welcoming speech from Margrit Biever Mondavi, guests enjoyed an outstanding dinner by Winery Chef Jeff Mosher paired with Robert Mondavi wines. The menu included: Compressed Watermelon Salad (2012 Robert Mondavi Winery Oakville, Napa Valley Fumé Blanc), Grilled Five Dot Ranch Rib Eye with Pesto Polenta, Wild Mushrooms, Arugula Salad (2010 Robert Mondavi Winery Oakville, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve), and Lemon Birthday Cake with Blueberries and Lemon Curd (2013 Robert Mondavi Winery Napa Valley Moscato d’Oro).

Yes, Birthday Cake was for dessert, as this night the festival was celebrating four birthdays: Pinchas Zukerman, Julia Bullock, Juan Ramirez (Sphinx Orchestra violinist), and Jan Shrem.

As a final present to all at the dinner, Julia Bullock stood up and sang a heartfelt Somewhere, composed by Leonard Bernstein, whose Trouble in Tahiti chamber opera will be presented this evening.
